Undeceptions podcast with John Dickson
Episode 139 Nov 2024
This is an excellent and detailed summary of Bonhoeffer’s legacy to Germany and beyond. It is produced with a Christian audience in mind but not exclusively. It warns of the easy mistake of hijacking Bonhoeffer for your own personal agendas or current crisis, e.g. “The Bonhoeffer Moment” is challenged as we seem to be having every second person coin the phrase. Well worth the listen!
The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer
First published in 1959, 300 pages
This is really Bonhoeffer’s seminal work. It is a response to the context of growing national socialism and Nazism in Germany countered by an unpacking of the Sermon on the Mount, which in fact is the antithesis of everything Hitler was espousing at the time. If you want to understand more of how Bonhoeffer loved his country but hated where it was being taken and had the clarity to see that, this is the book to read - not necessarily cover to cover. Still an unsettling read even today - the cost to follow Jesus then and now.
